HOLME LACY 1 SAINTS RESERVES 1.

January 3rd, 2009

Match report to follow.

All other games were postponed due to the weather.

The Saints gained a creditable draw against a side who had beaten them easily 5-1 at Forest Road only weeks earlier. They showed  real committment on a pitch that in my opinion was not fit to play on with the players sounding like horses running on a road and the ball sometimes bouncing sideways like a rugby ball.

The Saints had the better of the first half with the defence dealing well with the strong home forwards. Occasionally we did get caught when we tried to play too much football from the back and were sold short by the pitch. We were dominant in midfield with Stu Davies having another good game in central midfield and Garry Keeble proving a useful outlet on the right. Keeble went close with a cracking left foot shot from 20 yards before Will Goodwin showed his poaching instincts finishing after Tom Wilkes’ shot had been blocked. HT 0-1.

In the second half the home side came out and played like Hay had the first getting the ball wide early and started to get on top without really testing Sulli in goal. A couple of times he showed his experience though by reading situations well and clearing up behind the defence. Alex Winstone also came into his own dominating in the air as the home side launched everything long as they tried to force there way into the game,

Hays best chances in the second half fell to Wini who had two headed chances. The first from a Chris Bounds free kick where he almost squeezed the ball in at the far post and, the second from a Keeble corner which he didn’t quite get enough on and the keeper saved.

The home side equalised controversially with 15 minutes to go when they broke and as the ball was crossed the offside flag went up and was ignored as the centre forward finished past Sulli.

With the pitch condition getting worse both sides were happy to hear the final whistle with no injuries caused by the dangerous conditions.

SAINTS RESERVES 4 SHOBDON 0.

December 20th, 2008

Match report to follow.

Hay ran out easy winners by 4 goals to nil against an understrength Shobdon after leading 1-0 at half time thanks to a Stu Davies goal.

Playing with the wind Shobdon started well and nearly went into the lead when their striker went through and, as Sully came of his line he lobbed him and hit the bar. The Saints seemed to struggle for a bit of rhythm in the first half not being able to string passes together. They went into the lead when Stu found the net through a sea of legs, the ball just getting over the line.

The second half saw the Saints really get a grip on the game and it was no surprise when Stu D ran through and calmly finished from 8 yards. Ben Walsh, who was a second half substitute, got the third with a good strikers finish after the keeper had made a save. It was left to Stu D to have the final word though as he headed home a  corner to make the final score 4-0.

Team;R Sullivan, A Howard, C Bounds, A Winstone, L Pugh, M Ward(T Johnson), S Davies, Ga Keeble,T Wilks, J Thomas(B Walsh), W Goodwin(J Sly) Unused subs Gr Keeble, J Howard.

One more thing LET THE SHAVING BEGIN!

SAINTS 9 BUILTH WELLS 1.

December 17th, 2008

The Saints moved 6 points clear at the top of the league tonight after beating 4th placed Builth Wells 9-1

Builth started the brighter and took a deserved lead when Capatain Shane Claridge opened the scoring after 10 minutes, 4 minutes later Josh Wisniewski got the equaliser by getting on the end of a Ben Bevan cross, Wisniewski then turned provider for strike partner Kevin Jones who blasted home from the edge of the box to make it 2-1. The Saints were now in total control and could have added more if it hadn’t been  for Hope in the Builth goal and the crossbar which was hit on a couple of occasions, the away side nearly snatched an equaliser on the stroke of half-time but Tom Jones headed wide with the goal at his mercy. ht 2-1.

The Saints scored 3 goals in a 5 minute spell to put the game out of Builth’s reach, Joe Mayglothling put in Jones for his second and then Jones returned the favour with Mayglothling finshing well with his left peg, Jones completed his hat-trick after good work down the left from Gavin Williams. Midfielder Rob Snedden burst from the half way line to score a good individual goal to make it 6-1, sub John Daw then set up Wisniewski for the 7th, Wisniewski put in Daw for the 8th, he then finished well after a through ball from Sam Mayglothling for his hat-trick and the Saints 9th and final goal of the night. ft 9-1.

I didn’t see all the game but what I did see we looked very impressive and were scoring goals  for fun in the second period. I thought Kevin Jones was the man of the match for us for scoring 3 plus his all round game was excellent.

Team- B.Kirkham, R.Jones(J.Davies), M.Havard, C.Preece(c), P.Davies, B.Bevan(G.Williams), R.Snedden, S.Mayglothling, J.Mayglothling(J.Daw), K.Jones, J.Wisniewski.
